Hard-nosed Advice to Lunar Prospectors
David Beaty, associate Chief Scientist for NASA's Mars Program, has provided some advice for future prospectors on the Moon and Mars. Beaty spent 10 years working as a prospector on Earth before coming to NASA, and his experience has led him to make recommendations on how to search for and utilize in situ resources on the Moon and beyond.
Learning how to live off of local resources, such as water ice on the Moon, will play a vital role in establishing long-term human settlement on the Moon and Mars. Human explorers on Mars will one day help scientists search for signs of past or present life on the Red Planet. Simply by traveling in space, astronauts can also tell us a great deal about the potential future for life beyond our planet.
