Columbus Arrives in Florida
The European Space Agency's Columbus module, a major European contribution to the International Space Station, has been delivered to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Columbus will now be prepared for delivery to the ISS onboard a future space shuttle flight.
The Columbus laboratory will afford astronauts the unique opportunity to perform a range of experiments important to astrobiology. One component of the laboratory is the BIOLAB, which is specifically designed for performing microgravity experiments on organisms ranging from microbes to small invertebrates. Research concerning how Earth life responds to the microgravity environment found in low Earth orbit can help us understand the principles that will shape the future of life beyond our planet.
