Scientists are particularly interested in Saturn's moon Titan because it's one of the few known moons with its own dense atmosphere. Titan's atmosphere is also thought to be very similar to what Earth's atmosphere was a long time ago. By learning about Titan, we'll learn about our own planet.

NASA Releases Genesis Accident Report

NASA has released the findings of the 15-member board that investigated why the drogue parachute and parafoil systems failed to properly deploy and slow the Genesis Sample Return Capsule during re-entry. The report is now available online.

Genesis was designed to collect small amounts of solar material in the solar wind and return them to Earth for investigation. Although the sample return capsule had a hard landing back on Earth in 2004, some of the collectors onboard made it to the surface safely.

Although most of the solar wind is comprised of hydrogen, Genesis' goal was to capture samples of all elements in the periodic table to allow a detailed study of the Sun's composition. These samples will provide important information about the Sun and the formation of the Solar System. Understanding the connection between the Sun and Earth is important for determining the habitability of other planets. This information can also help scientists estimate the number of potentially habitable environments in the Universe.
