NASA Gives 'Go' for Space Shuttle Discovery's Launch
NASA senior managers on Saturday cleared the Space Shuttle Discovery for a July 1 flight to the International Space Station. The 12-Day mission, dubbed STS-121, will test new hardware and techniques to improve shuttle safety, as well as deliver supplies, make repairs and bring a third crew member to the station.
NASA's Space Shuttle fleet has played an important role in astrobiology research at NASA. Many experiments concerning the response of terrestrial life to conditions in space have been conducted aboard the Space Shuttles. The Shuttles are also a primary means of transporting astronauts to and from the International Space Station. Human missions aboard the International Space Station can tell scientists a great deal about the future of life on Earth and beyond.
