Scientists are particularly interested in Saturn's moon Titan because it's one of the few known moons with its own dense atmosphere. Titan's atmosphere is also thought to be very similar to what Earth's atmosphere was a long time ago. By learning about Titan, we'll learn about our own planet.

NASA Uses Undersea Lab to Prep for Future Space Exploration

Three astronauts and an oceanographer are preparing for the upcoming NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO) 10 project. From July 22 to 28, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Koichi Wakata will lead the crew aboard the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Aquarius underwater laboratory. He will be joined by NASA astronauts Andrew J. Feustel and Karen L. Nyberg, and Karen Kohanowich, deputy director of NOAA's Undersea Research Program.

The NEEMO missions provide a means of testing techniques and equipment that will aid human explorers on the Moon and Mars. Astronauts perform a number of experiments important to astrobiology, and protecting their safety is vital for missions in orbit and beyond. The information gathered from the undersea mission can help make spaceflight safer, and thereby yield information about the future of life on Earth and beyond.
