Mars Global Surveyor's role in understanding the history of water on Mars has been vital for astrobiologists studying the potential for past or present life on the red planet. Because life as we know it requires liquid water to survive, determining the nature of past liquid water at the surface of Mars is the first step in searching for signs of past life.
