Scientists are particularly interested in Saturn's moon Titan because it's one of the few known moons with its own dense atmosphere. Titan's atmosphere is also thought to be very similar to what Earth's atmosphere was a long time ago. By learning about Titan, we'll learn about our own planet.

Alien Life More Likely to Be Found outside Solar System

There is a greater chance of discovering life outside our solar system than in it, says astrobiologist Norman Pace of the University of Colorado at Boulder's Center for Astrobiology and the NASA Astrobiology Institute. Neither Mars nor Jupiter's moon Europa, the most likely candidates for life elsewhere in our solar system, are terribly encouraging, he argues. Determining whether life exists elsewhere in the solar system is one of the primary goals of astrobiology.

"…[I]f life is really going to succeed and flourish for an extended period, I think it has to take over and modify a planet on the surface, like it has on Earth.," says Pace. But the only auspicious habitats for life on Mars or Europa lie underground. On Europa, an ocean of liquid water may sit hidden beneath a crust of ice several kilometers thick. On Mars, harsh ultraviolet light from the Sun makes the top layer of soil chemically inhospitable. "Perhaps the soils under Olympus Mons—a mountain nearly 90,000 feet high—have some type of circulation method for underground water, which would enhance the chances of life," says Pace. Even so, life in these sunless situations would have to survive by eating hydrogen and carbon dioxide and making methane, a process called methanogenesis; or by eating hydrogen sulfide and oxygen, known as chemosynthesis. Pace has studied both kinds of metabolism up close in hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor and in hot springs in Yellowstone National Park. But he says the metabolism that is essential to abundant life on Earth and other planets is photosynthesis—converting light into food and energy. And photosynthesis can only happen at a planet's surface.

"The basic theme here is that if you look at what is required for life, it really is a narrow window," says Pace. "Our solar system outside Earth doesn't seem too promising to sustain life, but we don't know what kind of extreme conditions conducive to life may be found elsewhere in the universe." Since microbes have been discovered on Earth anywhere from polar ice to boiling undersea geysers, he estimates that the temperature range for life in the universe may be roughly -60 degrees Fahrenheit to 300 F. Determining the environmental limits that life can withstand is another major goal of astrobiology.

Pace expects that we may be able to spot life on extrasolar planets (planets outside our solar system) by looking for gases such as oxygen and methane in the planets' atmospheres. Intelligent life in distant galaxies might very well be using this technique to detect us. Identifying extrasolar biomarkers is one of astrobiology's objectives.

Last October, Pace was awarded one of the so-called "genius grants" from the MacArthur Foundation, as was fellow astrobiologist Chris Chyba.
