Scientists are particularly interested in Saturn's moon Titan because it's one of the few known moons with its own dense atmosphere. Titan's atmosphere is also thought to be very similar to what Earth's atmosphere was a long time ago. By learning about Titan, we'll learn about our own planet.

A Robotic Return to the Moon

Priorities for the next decade in space exploration are the focus of a recent National Research Council report entitled "New Frontiers in the Solar System." Among the proposed projects is a robotic sample return mission to the Moon’s South Pole-Aitken Basin. This basin on the far side of the Moon is an exceptionally large impact site left behind by the Late Heavy Bombardment. Samples from this area could offer valuable insight into this devastating period in both lunar and terrestrial histories. It is also possible that a robotic sampler could return pieces of Earth that were ejected during the Late Heavy Bombardment and landed on the Moon’s surface. Such ancient terrestrial rocks could tell us a great deal about Earth’s geological history, and possibly offer insight into the origin of life on our planet. Researchers are also hopeful that a robotic sample return mission to the Moon would be a step toward advanced technologies for similar missions to other destinations, such as Mars and Venus.
