Alan R. Hargens

Gravitational Research Branch

NASA-Ames Research Center

Dr. Alan R. Hargens has been the Principal Investigator on experiments involving cardiovascular and musculoskeletal adaptations of animals and humans to gravity. He has studied giraffes in Africa and arboreal snakes on the Amazon River to understand how their tissues have adapted to high and variable levels of gravitational stress. His recent research focuses on development of new forms of artificial gravity to provide physiologic levels of stress for long-duration space travel without the need for a centrifuge. He has recently patented noninvasive techniques for measuring intracranial pressure and understanding spinal responses to weight bearing.
