Physics and Astronomy
University of Massachusetts, Amherst
Bill Irvine is Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of
Massachusetts, Amherst. His research interests have included
cosmology, planetary atmospheres, comets and other small solar system
bodies, and interstellar chemistry. He has participated in the
identification of several new interstellar molecules, in elucidating
chemical pathways in molecular clouds, and in developing techniques
for analyzing radiative transfer in atmospheres and surfaces. His interest
in astrobiology relates to his research on interstellar organic chemistry
and its relationship to the chemistry of comets and hence to the early
Earth. He has been a Co-Investigator on the USSR Phobos mission to Mars,
has served on various national advisory committees, was Discipline
Specialist for Radio Astronomy with the International Halley Watch, and
is a past Chairman of the American Astronomical Society Division for
Planetary Sciences.
