Robert D. MacElroy is a Senior Staff Scientist in the Space Technology
Division at Ames. His thesis work was completed at the Biology Division
of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and he received a Ph.D. in
1966 (U. Massachusetts). He served as an NRC Research Associate in
the Exobiology Division of NASA-Ames Research Center from 1966 to
1969, and has been a research scientist at Ames since 1969. He spent
one year at the Exobiology Department of Nijmegen University,
Nijmegen, The Netherlands (1971-72), and 18 months at NASA
Headquarters (1973 -74). His disciplinary research interests include
biochemistry, enzymology, microbial physiology, the evolution of
molecular structures, mathematical models of molecular structure, and
the dynamics of molecular interactions. His programmatic interests
include Mars terraforming, space life support, natural and artificial
control of complex systems, flight experiment systems development, and
gravitational biology. He has authored or co-authored more than 100
papers in broad areas of scientific research and technology development.
