Anneila Sargent

Anneila I. Sargent is Director of Caltech's Owens Valley Radio Observatory and Senior Research Associate at the California Institute of Technology, from which she received her Ph.D. in Astronomy. In 1988 she was Caltech "Woman of the Year." Dr. Sargent has served on a wide variety of national committees, including the NRC's Committee for Astronomy and Astrophysics and NSF's Mathematical and Physical Sciences Advisory Committee. In 1995-96, she chaired the Visiting Committee to the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. She is a Council member of the American Astronomical Society and has been Chair of NASA's Space Science Advisory Committee since 1994. Using millimeter-wave arrays, she is currently investigating the detailed properties of the gas and dust in proto-planetary disks to establish the likely frequency of other planetary systems and to elucidate how the solar system formed and evolved.
