Anneila I. Sargent is Director of Caltech's Owens Valley Radio
Observatory and Senior Research Associate at the California Institute
of Technology, from which she received her Ph.D. in Astronomy. In 1988
she was Caltech "Woman of the Year." Dr. Sargent has served on a wide
variety of national committees, including the NRC's Committee for
Astronomy and Astrophysics and NSF's Mathematical and Physical Sciences
Advisory Committee. In 1995-96, she chaired the Visiting Committee to
the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. She is a Council member of
the American Astronomical Society and has been Chair of NASA's Space
