George Wetherill

Carnegie Institute of Washington

Dr. George Wetherill began his career studying isotope and trace element geochemistry in terrrestrial, lunar, and meteoritic rock samples. He then turned to the early evolution of the Earth-Moon system and the source regions of the meteorites. He initiated one of the first numerical studies of planetesimal orbit evolution and the planetary accretion by slow collisional growth from planetesimals. Recently he has studied the diversity of planetary systems under different initial conditions. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the recipient of the G. K. Gilbert Award (Geological Society of America), the G. P. Kuiper Award (American Astronomical Society/Division of Planetary Science), the Hess Medal (American Geophysical Union), and the Leonard Medal (Meteoritical Society).
