Geoffrey W. Marcy

Dr. Geoffrey Marcy received his Ph.D. in Astrophysics from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1982. After an appointment as a Carnegie Fellow at The Carnegie Observatories, he joined San Francisco State University, where he is currently a Professor of Physics and Astronomy. Since 1991, Dr. Marcy has also been a Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley. His work on the detection of extrasolar planets succeeded in dramatic fashion in 1996 with his discovery, with R. Paul Butler, of several large planets orbiting other stars.
