Mr. Townsend is currently the Acting Associate Administrator of the Office of Mission to Planet Earth (OMTPE) with the responsibility for the management, direction, and oversight of all OMTPE flight programs. He previously held positions as Deputy Associate Administrator (Programs), Deputy Director of the Earth Science and Applications Division, Chief of the Flight Programs Branch in that Division, and Program Manager for the TOPEX/Poseidon and NSCAT programs. He began his career at NASA's Wallops Flight Center,where he had a variety of responsibilities mainly relating to the development of remote sensing instruments for flight on aircraft and satellites. Mr. Townsend is a member of IEEE and several honor societies. He received the NASA Exceptional Service Medal for his pioneering work in radar altimetry; the NASA Medal for Outstanding Leadership and the French Space Agency (CNES) Bronze Medal, both for his work on the highly successful TOPEX/Poseidon mission; and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal for his leadership and technical guidance of the Mission to Planet Earth program.
